Kommetjie Primary School

A Cape Town primary school cutting its electricity costs with solar, at no upfront cost.

The project

In May 2025, we installed a solar PV system at Kommetjie Primary School in Cape Town under a Power Purchase Agreement.

The school pays only for the electricity generated by the system, at a contracted tariff. The system is funded, owned, operated and maintained by us, so the school had no capital outlay and carries no maintenance costs.

The savings

Actual results, May 2025 to October 2026

  • Saving in the first 12 months: R23,011, against a projected R21,000
  • Total saved in the first 18 months: R32,213
  • Solar electricity generated: 78 MWh
  • Share of the school's electricity supplied by solar: 40%

Figures are taken from the monthly PPA statements, comparing what the school paid against what the same electricity would have cost from the City.

Looking ahead

Annual tariff increases are set out in the school's contract. Our long-term projections for the school are:

  • Year 10 projected annual saving: R70,000
  • Year 20 projected annual saving: R211,000
  • Projected 20-year cumulative savings: R2.2 million

What we handled

Data logging and system design, approvals, structural sign-off, installation, AMI smart meter, CoC and Pr Eng commissioning, and ongoing operation and maintenance.
